Welcome to the home page of SRK Science and Technology Research aka Sun Ripened Kernels (or just 'SRK' or 'sunrk')!

Sun Ripened Kernels closed down as a commercial business operation from January 1, 2007. Commercial trading through Ebay ceased from September 2006, and the SRK Ebay store has been closed down also. I am still trading on Ebay in a personal capacity only (see below).

I am still able to source, supply (and optionally program) NVRAM's to suit all Sun4c, Sun4m and Sun4u class systems (ask for current pricing - tends to fluctuate) and I'll try to continue sourcing Ultraspec products on a per-request basis.

The cessation of the commercial business has allowed me a lot more time to devote to my family along with freeing up time to focus on other things such as developing the SunShack (established in 1997!), and involvement with RailZone Australia and Classic Saab websites along with a completely new job for my main source of employment!

Bit of background for those who aren't sure what happened... The turning point leading to the fundamental decision to wind back (and finally shut down) SRK came during a day in early November 2004 when the frustrations vented via the destruction of a pile of SS4/5 bases that had been sitting around for almost 12 months and had become iconic of the problems I'd been trying to juggle my family, my work and my own interests. Due to the growing family, there was less space to store things for the business and it wasn't financially viable to rent a warehouse unit.

Thanks to everyone who's supported me since 1996 when I kicked off the business. Instrumental in the hard road to having to make the final decision to change the focus of the business is that I incurred a significant loss during the last two years of commercial trading due to the collapse of the IT VAR market, despite generating significant profits in previous years before that, and my family (along with my main job at the time) was suffering emotionally and financially...

Those losses were partly the fault of my own mis-adventure (!), but also a result of external factors such as frustration with my job at the time (I worked for State Rail aka RailCorp from 1987 to 2007 and most of that time as a suburban train driver). I now work full-time as a locomotive driver. 8-)

SRK may come back in the future, though my family's physical, mental and financial health and well-being has to come first!

I will continue to develop and support my SunShack site as time permits but it will continue to exist whilever I remain passionate about non-Wintendo IT equipment (even though Sun makes most of it in China these days)! 8-) I refuse to have commercial sponsorship of the site as SunShack exists for everyone, not just for paying sponsors (or for Sun)!
